A silver finish idol has a silver-tone coating or plating applied over a base of copper zinc or brass giving it the appearance of polished silver at a fraction of the cost of solid silver. This finish is often referred to as silver polish (SP) or silver plated in product descriptions. A solid silver idol is cast from pure silver metal and is significantly more expensive making it a luxury or heirloom piece. For daily home puja use a silver finish idol is entirely appropriate and visually indistinguishable from silver when clean. The Vishnu Murti Standing on Lotus Silver Polish at 5x2.25 inches from Giri UK is an example of a high-quality silver finish piece suited for daily Vishnu worship.

Giri UK's Silver Finish Idols range currently stocks six products: Balaji Arch with Sitting Lakshmi in Copper SP at 1.5 inches 35g (miniature Balaji and Lakshmi for car shrine or travel puja); Peacock Murugar in Copper SP at 2 inches 55g (Murugan with his peacock vahana); Radha Krishnan in Copper SP at 2 inches 55g (the divine couple); Ranganathar in Copper SP at 1 inch 45g (Vishnu in his reclining form as worshipped at Srirangam); Vishnu Murti Standing on Lotus in Silver Polish at 5x2.25 inches (a more substantial altar piece); and Ram Darbar with Arch in Silver Antique Stone at 4.5 inches (Rama with Sita Lakshmana and Hanuman in a framed arch).

Ranganathar is Lord Vishnu in his Shayana form reclining on the serpent Adi Shesha (Ananta) in a state of cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra) with Goddess Lakshmi at his feet. This form is the primary deity of the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple in Tamil Nadu the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world and one of the 108 Divya Desams of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Ranganathar is particularly venerated by Iyengar and Sri Vaishnava communities. The Ranganathar Copper SP at 1 inch 45g from Giri UK is a compact silver finish version appropriate for a car shrine personal puja pouch or small altar shelf in Sri Vaishnava households in the UK.

For occasional abhishekam a silver finish idol can be used but care is needed. Silver plating is a surface treatment that can gradually wear away with repeated water exposure particularly when acidic substances like curd or tamarind water are used. For regular abhishekam a solid brass or copper idol is more appropriate as the base metal is not affected by the process. For silver finish idols a gentle symbolic abhishekam with a small amount of water or rosewater is preferable to a full liquid pour. Dry the idol thoroughly immediately after any water contact. Giri UK's Cleaning Items category includes Giri Silver Sparkler liquid cleaner specifically formulated to restore silver finish items without abrasion.
