Giri UK stocks Rangoli (Kolam) Powder in 250g packs across 8+ individual colours: Red, Dark Red, Mustard Yellow, Yellow, Orange, Dark Pink, Fuchsia Pink and Dark Blue. These fine powder colours are appropriate for use with stencils (jalis), cone-drawing freehand, or sprinkled directly through a small hole in the bag for dot-based kolam patterns. Giri UK also stocks Kavi Powder (100g) - a traditional red ochre powder used specifically for drawing the thick red border lines of South Indian kolam and for painting auspicious markings. Alongside the loose powders, pre-made decorative Rangoli pieces (lotus, rose, peacock and Om designs) are available for instant display.
Rangoli powder is a fine, brightly coloured decorative powder used to fill in and create the colourful patterns of a Rangoli or Kolam design - covering the interior areas of the design with solid colour. Kavi Powder is a red ochre (iron oxide) pigment used specifically for the thick red border and outline lines of traditional South Indian Kolam - it is applied to delineate the outer boundary of the kolam pattern, the entry gate motifs and the architectural framework of the design. Kavi is not used as a fill colour but as a structural marker. Using both Rangoli powder (for fill) and Kavi (for borders) together creates an authentic South Indian festival kolam. Both are available at Giri UK.
Rangoli Jalis are perforated stencil plates - flat sheets with a design cut out - through which Rangoli powder is tapped or sprinkled to create an instant pattern without freehand drawing skill. The jali is placed on the floor, powder is poured or tapped through the holes and the jali is lifted to reveal a clean, perfectly shaped Rangoli pattern. Giri UK stocks Rangoli Jali in 4-inch (2-piece set) and 12-inch formats, along with Rangoli Jali Dabba (3-piece set) - a set of stencil cups with different pattern openings for creating designs of varying scales. Jalis are particularly useful for beginners, for festival situations where time is short and for children participating in Rangoli-making.
Pre-made decorative Rangoli pieces are moulded resin or foam designs - shaped into traditional motifs such as lotus flowers, roses, peacocks and Om symbols - that can be placed on the floor or puja area as an instant Rangoli substitute without using powder at all. They are permanently reusable, avoid any mess or floor staining concerns and maintain their appearance throughout a festival period. Giri UK stocks Rose Rangoli (4 inch), Lotus Rangoli (2.5x4.5 inch and 4x5 inch), Peacock Rangoli (8.2 inch), Lakshmi Peedam Rangoli (10 inch), Decorative Rangoli (8.5 inch) and Rangoli Om Pearl Circle. These are particularly useful for UK homes where floor staining is a concern.
Rangoli powder cleans up easily from smooth floor surfaces - tile, sealed stone and wood laminate. Allow the powder to sit dry (do not get it wet first), then sweep up the majority with a soft brush and dustpan. Follow with a damp mop using warm water; for coloured residue on pale grout or porous stone, a mild floor cleaner may be needed. Avoid scrubbing dry powder - this embeds pigment into porous surfaces. For carpet or rugs, use a vacuum (not a brush) to lift the dry powder, then treat any residue with a mild upholstery cleaner. On all surfaces, cleaning promptly after the festival (rather than leaving powder for several days) makes removal significantly easier.
