Thambulam is an age old tradition, in which the female host offers Vethalai Paaku (Betel leaf and nut), along with Kumkum (Vermillion) and Manjal (Turmeric powder), to her female guests. It is believed that Vethalai Paaku is beloved by Ambal, the mother goddess, and the fragrance released when she chews it is released in all 10 directions. Turmeric is a highly auspicious ingredient - often linked with Varahi Amman. It is a medicinal marvel, with astonishing healing properties. Kumkum, or Vermillion, is believed to represent Shakti herself.
