Koorcham is the act of offering tarpanam (ritual offerings) to one's ancestors or pitrus using a special type of sacred grass or "kusha grass" (also spelled as "kusa" or "darbhai" grass). This practice holds great significance for Hindus especially during the Amavasya (New Moon) days when ancestral rituals are performed.
Kusha grass is associated with Lord Brahma, the 'creator', and is believed to have the power to connect with one's ancestors. By using kusha grass during tarpanam, it is thought that the offerings more effectively reach and benefit the departed souls.
The Koorcham offers protection from Negative Energies while performing the tarpanam as it is believed that the ancestors soul's actually traverse through time and space Kusha grass is believed to possess protective qualities and the ability to ward off negative energies. Using it in Pitru Tarpanam is thought to create a shield of protection for both the living and the separted.
