Yantras in Sanatana Dharma and Tantra Shastra

The word ‘Yantra’ finds its origin in the word ‘yam’ which means to govern, contain or control. Yantras are a symbolic representation of a Devi /Devata. In tantric tradition, there is no differentiation between the deity and the yantra.

Every yantra is energised by mantra and it is believed that an energised yantra is capable of offering protection to the worshipper and subduing the effects of sufferings. Through the worship of Yantra one can attain the 4 fundamental goals of life – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. However, because the yantra is the deity, negligence of rules related to its worship could lead to sufferings and problems. Therefore, it is imperative that a deity is enshrined in a yantra by a qualified spiritual Guru who also prescribes the correct method of worship according to the deity so enshrined.

There are numerous yantras in Sanatana Dharma, each with its own unique design and symbolism. Some of the most popular yantras include:

1. Sri Yantra: Also known as the Sri Chakra, the Sri Yantra is the most exalted and revered yantras in Sanatana Dharma. It is composed of nine interlocking triangles that radiate outwards from the central point, or Bindu, representing the cosmic forces of creation and dissolution.

2. Ganesha Yantra: This yantra represents, Sri Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It is believed to help overcome obstacles and challenges in life and invoke blessings for success and prosperity.

3. Navagraha Yantra: The Navagraha Yantra is associated with the nine celestial bodies or planets in Vedic astrology. Worshipping this yantra is believed to mitigate the negative effects of planetary influences and promote harmony and balance.

4. Lakshmi Dhanakarshana Yantra: This Yantra represents Maha Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Worshipping this Yantra is believed to bring mental, physical, spiritual, and monetary wealth to the devotee.

 5. Sudarshana Yantra: This Yantra embodies Sri Sudarshana – the chakra (disc) of Maha Vishnu. This powerful yantra, the essence of Maha Vishnu, is believed to rid devotees of any mental or physical sickness, while providing clarity and peace of mind.

Yantras are not decorative or artistic designs; they are profound spiritual items that embody the wisdom and principles of Sanatana Dharma. By incorporating yantras into your spiritual practice, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards self-discovery, enlightenment, and spiritual fulfillment. However, it is always strongly advised for yantra worship to be done under the guidance of a spiritual guru.
