This painting depicts Lord Muruga and his wives, Valli and Devayanai. The Lord in his 6 houses - the 6 major temples dedicated to him - is painted wonderfully: Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Pazhani, Swamimalai, Thirutthani, and Pazhamudircholai. These 6 temples were established in honour of 6 different important events in Lord Murugan's divine life. Thiruparankundram is believed to be the place where Lord Murugan married Devayanai.

The Thiruchendur temple commemorates the place where Murugan won a decisive victory over the asura Surapadman by worshipping Shiva. Sage Narada visited the celestial court of Shiva at Mount Kailash to present to him a fruit, the gnana-pazham (literally, the fruit of knowledge). He decided to award it to whichever of his two sons who first encircle the world thrice. Accepting the challenge, Murugan started his journey around the globe on his peacock. However, Ganesha, who surmised that the world was no more than his parents Shiva and Parvati combined, circumambulated them and won the fruit. Murugan was furious and felt the need to mature from boyhood and hence chose to remain as a hermit in Pazhani. The Swamimalai temple commemorates the incident where Muruga is regarded to have explained the essence of the Pranava mantra "Om" to his father Shiva.

Thirutthani is believed to be the place where the lord married Valli. Pazhamudircholai is the place where the knowledge of Avvaiyar, a famous Tamil poet and a Muruga Bhakta (Murugan Devotee), was put to the test by Lord Murugan in the form of a small boy. It is firmly believed that this episode took place at a tree near the temple and the tree is worshipped even today.

These 6 abodes of Lord Muruga, also known as Kartikkeya, are represented beautifully in this stunning piece of art. Made with utmost care and bhakti, this stunning, detailed artwork is and ideal addition to your home decor or pooja space.
