A gorgeous wooden pencil holder representing an Ashoka Pillar - a symbol of Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Dynasty.
Emperor Ashoka was one of the great emperors of the Mauryan Dynasty, and a renowned promulgator of Buddhism. Following a successful but bloody conquest of Kalinga (modern Odisha), Emperor Ashoka, feeling heavy remorse, renounced arms and promoted a more peaceful way of life. The Emperor poetically described Dharma, loosely translated to duty, to be the practise of benevolence, compassion, little sin and good deeds, and spread this important message of peace as far and wide as he could. His golden words were immortalised on many pillars and rocks throughout his empire.
One such pillar was the Lion Pillar at Sarnath, which has since become the national emblem of India. This eternal message of love, peace, and hope, often referred to as the Ashoka Pillar, is a patriotic symbol known and loved by every Indian today. It is beautifully represented by this skilfully carved wooden model, with a miniature Indian flag. Made with high quality wood, this model is long lasting, robust, and gorgeous to look at. With a sturdy base, it stands comfortably on any desk of bookshelf. It can easily accomodate a number of pens, pencils, rulers and other stationery.
