Jamakkalam - Traditional Handloom Carpet

A beautiful cotton carpet with coloured bands, made Historically in South India

Availability: In stock

The term "Jamakkalam" pertains to floor carpets that are hand-crafted in South India in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu.

In the late 19th century, the emergence of British textiles prompted Indian weavers, particularly the Jangamars community in South India, to innovate. They developed a distinctive blanket using colored coarse threads known as Jamakkalam. The popularity of this product led to a shift in production, with Jamakkalams replacing traditional sarees and other fabrics.

The Jamakkalams  are made from coarser cotton threads to produce carpets with coloured bands but lacks intricate designs.

Initially, independent weavers wove Jamakkalams in their homes. Over time, the production shifted to a system where master weavers oversaw hand-looms operated by contracted weavers.
