She is a form of Sri Lalita Tripurasundari, the mother of all. She is the shakti, or energy, behind every action and event in the universe - from the tiniest vibrations of atoms to the massive collisions of Galaxies. This particular form of the divine mother is the subject of one of the foremost pieces of Tamil literature - Abirami Anthadi. This is the story of its composition.

One day, a King visited the temple to pay homage to Lord Shiva. On noticing the peculiar behavior of Subramaniya Iyer, a temple priest, he inquired the other priests about the individual. One of them remarked that he was a madman, while another explained to the king that Subramaniya Iyer was simply an ardent devotee of Goddess Abirami. Seeking to know the truth himself, the King approached Subramaniya Iyer and asked him what day of the month it was. Subramaniya Iyer, who could see nothing else but the shining luminant form of the Goddess before him wrongly answered that it was a full-moon day (pournami) while it was in fact a new-moon day (amavasai). The King, angered by Subramaniya's apparent ignorance, ordered his head to be cut off if the moon did not appear in the sky by six in the night. The hours flew by, and Subramaniya Iyer found himself about to be excecuted, as the moon hadn't come out. Out of pure devotion, then and there, he composed the Abirami Anthadi - 100 slokas in praise of Goddess Abirami, where the final word of each verse is the first word of the next. Moved by Subramaniya Iyer's devotion, the goddess threw her earring into the sky, creating the image of a lustrous full moon. The King and his courtiers were shocked, and immediately repented their actions. Subramaniya Iyer was freed, and the King gave him the title of Abirami Bhattar - the priest of Abirami.
