Thai Poosam

Thai Poosam is a important festival that is celebrated not just across the southern state of Tamil Nadu, but also across Hindu communities in Singapore, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries in the far east. Thai is the 10th month in the Tamil calendar and extends from the middle of January to the middle of February. Poosam is one of the 27 revered constellations, and this festival is celebrated when this constellation appears on the full moon day in the month of Thai. This year (2024) this festival will be celebrated on January 25th.

Thai Poosam is a festival dedicated to the praise and worship of Lord Subrahmanya. It is a day where people offer their prayers of gratitude to Muruga for fulfilling their requests. It is also a day where devotees carry ‘kavadi’s’ which is a heavy wooden semi circulate carrier, decorated with peacock feathers while traversing long pilgrimage paths, imploring the Lord to fulfill their desires. Thai Poosam is a festival of a different kind, where devotees put themselves into extreme hardship in order that they are rid of their sufferings! Body piercings and making arduous journeys carrying burdens is a common sight during this festival. Kavadi Attam is the central theme of thaipoosam.
