The Vishnu Sahasranamam is a sacred Hindu text consisting of over 1000 names (sahasranamam) that glorify Lord Vishnu, along with the phalashruti (benefits of chanting his names). Lord Vishnu or Sriman Narayana is one of the principal deities within the Holy Trinity the other being Brahma and Maheshwara.
The Vishnu Sahasranamam was composed spontaneously by Sri Bhishma, who was on the side of the Kauravas. He was slain by Sri Krishna on the battlefield but had the blessing to decide the time his own death. So the great warrior was waiting for Uttarayana to start befor he could voluntarily cast his bodya and leave for the heavenly abode to attain the Lotus feet. Sri Bhishma (or Pitamaha) experienced Sri Krishna and artiulated each name of Narayana, rather beautifully. The daily chanting of these thousand and eight names is considered a profound form of worship and devotion to Lord Vishnu.
Each name in the Vishnu Sahasranamam describes a unique virtue, quality, or aspect of Lord Vishnu's divinity. It paints a picture in the mind about his all-encompassing nature as the preserver and sustainer of the universe. The significance of chanting or reciting the Vishnu Sahasranamam lies in its ability to purify the mind, foster a deep spiritual connection, and lead to the attainment of HIS blessings.
